Did I read that right? The IOC claims ownership of ANYTHING taken within an Olympic venue? So they own those pictures Joe Athlete takes as he's walking to the Opening Ceremonies? They own the video taken of multinational athletes chatting over a meal in the Olympic Village?

It will be interesting to compare the restrictions this year verses winter games 2 years from now. Not because of the continued evolution of user-generated-media, but just how much influence the China card plays in the whole thing.

Blogging is the most fast growing media. It`s great chance for Olympic, especially for such countries as China.Only bloggers give overall information about all huge events.Max freedom to bloggers!

This is a legal document and as such it has to try to set the rules down to support other legal documents that the IOC has in place, namely TV rights, etc. They can't sell exclusive rights to the Video in the form of TV rights and then say its open slather to any one with a mobile phone!

The thing about it is, how many of those Chinese with a mobile phone are going to be accredited? none. So this document doesn't effect them and opens the door to the clever bloggers to use that UGC to there advantage as they are sitting at home in their living room!

So I think you can't blame the IOC for this years Olympics as the rules sort of came before the explosion of UGC (remember many of these contracts go back 5-10 years) but I image the contacts will be a lot different going into the future because of the advent of UGC.

This is unnaceptable. Are they still living in the Dark Ages?

It's true that a new type of journalism is growing among bloggers. They can't restrict freedom of speech... at least, not to the ones that are not chinese...
